Aldebaran – 70′ JFA Classic
Aldebaran, a faithful “reproduction” of a 1930’s sailing yacht
Aldebaran is a sailing yacht with purely classic lines. This is not a traditional yacht nor is it a modern adaptation, but truly a ‘reproduction’ of the yachts of the 1930’s with elongated bow and stern, quite narrow amidships with a modern rig designed in harmony with the hull and the deck lines. Like all classic yachts, an accomplished finish is linked to good proportions and attention to detail. Design of freeboard, prow, and transom were essential parameters here. Deckhouse, skylights, cockpit and deck fittings are typically classical, and yet also functional. Some details, like the swivelling anchor davit (which is retractable) and the discrete organisation of the deck hardware, enhance the spirit of the yacht while remaining practical and enabling the owner to undertake two Atlantic crossings a year. With moderate displacement, fine bows entries and beautiful lines, it looks as though this yacht could be a replica of a classic yacht, barreling along smoothly regardless of the waves or the weather. Compare this to more modern hull shapes which can have a brutal comportment in certain sea states. The hull has harmonious sections and the deep bulb keel increases stability and upwind performance. The sensation at the helm is therefore, very pleasing. Performance has been optimised thanks to a velocity prediction programme, exactly as employed on other cruising yachts and race boats. Although the yacht is a classic yacht, performance was a key factor and she can attain a speed level comparable to most modern cruising yachts.
